Adam Shankman ("Hairspray") has been chosen to direct a new adaptation of "Bye, Bye Birdie" for producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher ("Legally Blonde"). The 1958 musical has been adapted into several films, including one starring Dick Van Dyke. Sony/Columbia Pictures will distribute the new film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the musical "tells of a character named Conrad Birdie, a popular singer whose character is based loosely on Elvis Presley. He's about to be shipped off to the army, but as part of a publicity stunt, he agrees to one last encounter with a fan before he goes to war."
