Universal Pictures has won the bidding rights for an "Asteroids" film adaptation from Atari, a project in which Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce. Matt Lopez will pen the screenplay.

Variety reports that Universal beat out bidding studios from Fox and Sony.

The 2-D game was released in 1979 and quickly became a classic video game hit.
